Lehmus Roastery believes in a brighter future and triples its production capacity

Lehmus Roastery uskoo lesompaan tulevaisuuteen ja kolminkertaistaa tuotantokapasiteettinsa

Lappeenranta-based coffee roastery Lehmus Roastery will invest in a new roaster this autumn. The new roaster, which has a roasting capacity of 30 kilograms per roasting batch, will triple its current production capacity, as the current roaster with a capacity of 15 kilograms will also remain in production use.

The larger roaster will enable increased production, new products and the construction of new distribution channels alongside the current ones. The investment is significant for the company and the increase in capacity will also bring new jobs to Lappeenranta.

In addition to the new roaster, the roastery is renovating its production facilities and increasing its storage capacity to enable larger roasting volumes in the future. Roasting will continue to be done by hand under the strict quality control of Lehmus Roastery roasters Jussi Tyrisevä and Aki Loiri .

The small roastery trend is growing like a wave

Dozens of new small roasters that rely on responsibly produced specialty coffee have been established in Finland in recent years. The market share of small roasters has doubled in five years. Currently, the combined turnover of small roasters is approximately 20 million euros. The turnover of the entire roasting industry in Finland is estimated to be approximately 500 million euros.

Specialty coffee is being consumed more and more, and Lehmus Roastery wants to be part of increasing the demand and production of great-tasting coffee.

"For four years we managed with the current 15-kilogram Giesen roaster finished with a gold-plated handle, but during the summer we noticed that during the busiest weeks the capacity was struggling and overtime was unavoidable. Even though times are uncertain, we are confident that the need for good coffee is not decreasing, but rather growing," says Arttu Muukkonen, CEO of Lehmus Roastery .

Although the outlook for the rest of the year is still uncertain after spring, Lehmus Roastery expects growth for the rest of the year – and for the coming years as well.

"Our production volume in 2020 is just over five percent of the Finnish small roastery market. So there is room for growth both through market growth and by seeking a larger market share," Muukkonen estimates.

"Our goal is to become the most significant small roaster in Finland. We have already been voted the best in Finland three times. An educated public already knows how to demand taste and quality from their cup of coffee, and that is what we small roasters offer," Muukkonen continues.
