What kind of coffee should you use in a coffee machine at home or at work?

Millaista kahvia kannattaa käyttää kahvikoneessa kotona tai työpaikalla?

Over the past couple of years, the popularity of coffee machines has grown enormously in Finland. More and more remote workers have a coffee machine that makes specialty coffee drinks in their home kitchen.

Coffee machines use coffee beans, as the machines have their own grinders that grind just the right amount of coffee for each cup of coffee. So what kind of coffee should you use in the machines?

You can't go wrong with quality, dark-roasted coffees.

The working mechanism of a coffee machine is different from filter coffee machines. Coffee machines from Jura, DeLonghi and similar brands are like automatic espresso machines, where hot water is filtered through a coffee cake. Depending on the program, the coffee then becomes either espresso or, for example, a cafe americano similar to filter coffee, where hot water is added to the espresso.

Cappuccinos and lattes, on the other hand, are made with a coffee machine by mixing a shot of espresso with frothed hot milk. The milk is usually added to the drink from a separate container.

We recommend dark roast coffees for coffee machines, as dark coffees have enough kick and roastiness that they also work well with milk.

A good choice from Lehmus Roastery's selection, for example, is Sammonlahti, which is intended for a really dark espresso, and Kimpinen, which works well as a medium-roast espresso.

We also know that the dark roasted Lauritsala and the darker Pusupuisto are used in coffee machines with good success.

How do light coffees fit into a coffee machine?

Dark coffees are better suited than light coffees, especially for those who have just bought a coffee machine. Light-roasted coffees retain more of the coffee's natural acidity and fruity or berry aromas. For light coffee machine coffees, we recommend Kanava and medium-roasted Muukko . The truly brave can choose one of the coffees from the Ylähylly selection , which are typically light and fruity berry coffees.

The coffee machine's extraction method squeezes the aromas of each coffee to the utmost, making dark coffees clearly distinguishable by chocolate and nuttiness, while light coffees are more clearly distinguishable by acidity and citrus. Although these are very pleasant flavors in coffee, many people may wish for such dark coffee flavor experiences in their cappuccinos and lattes.

This is why dark roasted coffees are at least good for commuting!
