What is the best coffee grinder? Tips and instructions for choosing and using a home coffee grinder

Millainen on paras kahvimylly? Vinkkejä ja ohjeita kotikäyttöisen kahvimyllyn valintaan ja käyttämiseen

When you want the best possible coffee, we recommend considering purchasing a coffee grinder for home use. Coffee ground from beans just before brewing will inevitably have more aromas than pre-ground coffee. Coffee also stays aromatic as beans for significantly longer than pre-ground coffee.

The smell of home-ground coffee is also very intoxicating, so it's worth getting a grinder for your home for that reason alone.

Of course, your own grinder requires a little more time and effort, so understandably not everyone has the energy to invest that much. But if and when your coffee hobby has reached a stage where you no longer want to drink bad coffee, a grinder is the next step in the sport.

We have sold a lot of grinders over the past year, so it's high time we published a little tip guide to the world of coffee grinders.

What kind of mill is good?

Wilfa Classic Aroma

Lehmus Roastery sells the Wilfa Classic Aroma electric conical burr grinder and black grinder the most for a few reasons:

- In our experience, it is the best value for money
- The mill is fast
- Matte black color and stylish design make it suitable for any space
- Grinding fineness adjustment is easy
- The adjustment options are extensive; everything from pan grinding through a filter to a mocha pot and, in theory, espresso can be found

Here are some tips regarding Wilfa's mill, also in video form:

Electric or manual?

We recommend an electric mill because of its ease. Manual mills are good for camping or at the cottage where electricity is not available, but they can easily wear out both your nerves and your hand strength when cranking.

Sure, if you only brew one or two cups of coffee at a time, you can get by with a hand grinder, but for those who brew a little more coffee, an electric grinder is a lifesaver.

Conical blade grinder grinds evenly

A Wilfa grinder costs around 100-120 euros in different stores. It's not cheap, but it's good. A good grinder grinds the coffee to a uniform size. Really cheap electric grinders usually have blender-like blades, and they tear the beans to an uneven size. Then the extraction result will also vary. So conical blades are a good choice.

Tips for using the mill

Okay, the black package has arrived at home and the mill needs to be put into operation. How do you run this?

This is where it starts:

1. Adjust the coffee experience to your liking

The Wilfa grinder has a few different controls. There is a power button on the side of the device, which you should click on when you start grinding.

The front panel of the mill has various adjustment options.

2. Grinding coarseness regulator

First, the grinding coarseness adjustment is selected from the cone at the top. We recommend experimenting with the effect of different settings on the taste of the coffee. Many people grind their coffee finer than Wilfa's recommended Filter grinding setting, even for Aeropress grinding.

The grinder's blades may also loosen with age, so at some point you may notice that the coffee doesn't taste right: then it may be time to adjust the grind a little finer.

There's nothing stopping you from being silly and experimenting with extreme grinds. That's where your sense of taste and understanding develops when you taste really coarsely ground coffee and compare it to really finely ground coffee.

3. No need to use a timer

The grinder also has a timer, like an egg timer, that allows you to set the grinding time from 0-30 seconds. The idea is that if you know that you always need the same amount of coffee for, say, four cups, you can set the timer to always grind the same amount of coffee. However, it is not a very accurate method.

4. The most accurate amount of coffee on a household scale

Therefore, we recommend using a kitchen or household scale to measure the correct amount of coffee. The timer is a bit imprecise. Some coffees grind faster than others, and on the other hand, the amount of beans in the storage cone, i.e. the weight, affects how quickly the coffee is ground in the grinder.

A more accurate result is obtained when there are no beans left in the cone, but the cone is always empty. For example, you can measure the coffee into the grinder's plastic container, feed the beans into the grinder, and put the plastic container back in place. So, based on your own experience, you can set the time adjustment long enough so that the usual dose has time to go through the grinder, but so that it does not grind empty for too long.

Of course, you can also stop grinding by pressing the Grind button again.

And basic rules of thumb for measuring coffee: In the Moccamaster measurement chart, 1 cup is 1.25dl of water, or 7.5 grams of coffee. Four cups = 30 grams, six cups = 45 grams, and eight cups = 60 grams.

5. Cleaning the mill

There are no very specific instructions for cleaning the grinder. The outer edge of the cone and blades can be removed and cleaned if you feel like it. If you want to make sure that your coffee tastes exactly as it should, it is worth removing all the detachable parts, cleaning them with a damp cloth, compressed air or whatever you like, and attaching the parts back to the device.

Another option is to grind a few coffee beans through the grinder before changing the coffee.

With these tips, you can enjoy better coffee experiences!
