We have not offered Kenyan coffees as Limited, i.e. roasted to the optimal roast level, for a long time, because we have not felt that Kenyan coffees in recent harvest seasons have been good enough for our special selection.
In our specialty selections, we by definition feature high-quality specialty batches from all over the coffee world, and the most important thing for us is always that the coffee has a clear character. Just nice or that is not enough, and although we are constantly tasting new coffees, including Kenyan ones, we have not really come up with a memorable coffee.
Until – as you might guess – the situation has changed! The AA-level coffee arriving from the Kii washing station on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya surprised us with its goodness: a really, really full mouthfeel, a nice, tasty blackcurrant-like flavor, with sweetness and a nice buttery and creamy thickness that has led us to create this new Limited, the Limited Kii AA Kenya .

What does the name of the coffee tell us?
Kii means the washing station where this coffee comes from. The coffee arrives from the farms of the Rung´eto farming community. In Kenya, coffee is typically grown on very small farms, practically in rural areas for household needs, so these coffee berries are usually taken to a washing station – it is not even possible to buy coffee from one farm, but the coffees are at best blends specific to the washing station.
AA refers to the quality classification of coffee beans, where AA means the largest, most flawless, and otherwise most beautiful and magnificent quality of coffee beans that can be obtained from Kenya.
Below are a few pictures from the Kii car wash:

At the Kii washing station, the coffees are first washed in sinks. In the background, you can see raised coffee beds where the coffee beans are dried.

Drying usually takes a couple of weeks. The coffee beans are moved and turned several times a day to ensure they dry evenly.
