How to get more flavor out of your coffee – five tips from Lehmus Roastery

Näin saat enemmän makua irti kahvista – viisi vinkkiä Lehmus Roasterylta

Every new day is a gift, and you can easily unwrap that gift by drinking good coffee, for example. Here are a few tips that have been proven to be effective in roastery tasting circles, which will make the taste experience more complete than usual.

1. Prepare your taste buds for coffee

Don't drink coffee right after brushing your teeth, eating garlic, chili, chewing gum, or any other strong flavor. A mouth full of strong spices or flavors won't recognize the difference between coffee and water (joke), so when preparing for a proper coffee tasting, rinse your mouth with room temperature water, swish it around, live the previous day in a healthy way, and only taste oatmeal boiled in water before drinking coffee, if at all. That way, your mouth is ready for enjoyment.

2. Breathe deeply, breathe calmly, experience peace

Live stress-free. In an agitated state, you don't have time to sense the taste experience and flavors may seem more acidic or sharper than usual. Make coffee a ceremonial moment, breathe deeply five times and only then taste.

3. Let the coffee cool, it tastes better

Some people drink their coffee really hot. The hot liquid tastes like water vapor and the atmosphere is tangy and stale, the aftertaste screams for ice and cooling. There is hardly any nuttiness or fruitiness. When the coffee cools down a bit, its aromas open up to their full potential. The mouth senses flavors best when they are at about body temperature.

4. Rest between tasting rounds, also try corn chips

Intensive tasting can tire your sense of taste. In addition to rest, baby corn chips can also help with this. They clean the taste buds in your mouth and you can try different flavors again. It is also worth scheduling different tastings in the morning, when your senses are sharper.

5. Enjoy only high-quality coffee, of course

The best tasting coffee is from relatively fresh (about 2-8 weeks from the day of roasting) coffee beans that have been ground just before brewing. The high-quality, aroma-filled coffee beans used by small roasters contain a wealth of flavors and aromas, as the coffee berries have been hand-picked and roasted slowly and leisurely to their best taste.
