Lehmus Roastery

Iced coffee with flavored syrup – this is how you make a caramel iced latte at home!

Caramel-jäälatte, jääkahvi makusiirapilla

Various iced coffees are a sure sign of summer and vacation. On the other hand, at the Lehmus Roastery café at Satamatie 6, the iced latte season starts right in the spring and continues well into the fall.

It's no wonder, because the delicious drink available in cafes is mouth-watering. Iced coffees combine smooth espresso and rich milk, with optional flavored syrup, to create the perfect combination. The ice cubes keep the drink cold, and are a great way to cool down on hot summer days.

How to make iced coffee at home without an espresso machine – the best tips here

In cafes that take iced coffee seriously, iced lattes are made with a double espresso shot. The short coffee shot is enough to flavor the entire rest of the drink and gives the taste a refreshing sensation. But don't worry, you can easily get close to this experience at home!

With a few tricks, you can make this hit drink at home in no time at all, without the need for espresso machines or milk frothers.

Tip 1: Stronger coffee

The secret is to brew a stronger coffee with a regular filter coffee maker. This way we can replicate the same milk to coffee ratio as in cafes.

So, make strong coffee using double the amount of coffee you would normally use. If you normally use two scoops of coffee, use four for an iced latte: instead of 15 grams, use 30 grams, and so on. However, you can adjust the amount to your liking.

If you have an Aeropress machine at home, you can also make stronger coffee with it: finer grinding than usual and strong pressure on the cylinder, that's how it starts.

If you have an adjustable coffee grinder at home, it is worth adjusting the grind to a finer setting. With the Wilfan Svart Aroma coffee grinder, you can adjust the grind to almost espresso-like. It works well for making iced lattes. In this case, you don't need to increase the amount of coffee, just make sure the grind is really fine.

Tip 2: larger ice cubes

The next trick is related to ice cubes. To ensure that you can enjoy your drink for as long as possible, use larger ice cube trays. The ice cubes made from them melt more slowly than small ice cubes, and they are also much more flexible!

Tip 3: add flavoring syrup

If you like sweet and flavored coffee drinks, you should add flavored syrup to your iced latte. The most popular syrups are, understandably, caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. Flavored syrups can be purchased at grocery stores, where you can find options for even the wildest flavor combinations.

Tip 4: Serve with style

To add to the café atmosphere, enjoy your iced latte from an old glass jar with a straw. Using the right coffee is also important for the full experience. At our café at Satamatie 6, we use medium-roasted Kimpi or darker Sammonlahti, depending on the customer's preference. Both are excellent for making this cold drink at home.

And of course, it's important to show others that you have coffee-quality drinks at home: take a picture before the coffee is fully mixed with the milk or oat drink, so that the coffee tones still look great. Make sure that the light hits the glass from the side or behind, take the picture from a slightly upward angle and just keep on social media!

Tip five: freeze coffee in ice cube trays

If you ever have leftover coffee left at the bottom of your pot after you've finished brewing (hopefully this doesn't happen very often), pour the coffee into ice cube trays and freeze it for a homemade iced latte! Frozen coffee doesn't dilute the drink like regular ice cubes when it melts, quite the opposite. At the same time, you're reducing waste, pure profit!
